Rockline Industries: Ambitious goals help meet customer expectations

Strong goals drive successful program

Rockline Industries is the largest supplier of coffee filters and private label baby wipes in North America. When high-profile customers like Walmart, Starbucks and Seventh Generation, began requesting sustainability data and improvements, the family-owned, private-label manufacturer needed to get ahead of the curve.

Through consultations with senior executives and analyses of stakeholder needs, Pure Strategies helped Rockline craft a sustainability strategy that built on a long-standing commitment to integrity and focused on reducing costs across the value chain, improving environmental performance, and communicating efforts to stakeholders.

Implementing the Strategy

Pure Strategies advised Rockline on best practices for integrating sustainability into existing business processes; provided tools for measuring and tracking performance; conducted facility audits; and provided technical expertise as needed. Rockline’s dedication to the process allowed for quick adoption, and the company easily met one-year targets for energy, GHG emissions, waste and transportation.

Next, Rockline worked with Pure Strategies to set ambitious five-year goals and devise a long-term vision that includes fossil fuel independence, minimal waste and the development of truly sustainable products.

Fast Forward...

By the time Rockline published its 2012 sustainability report, the company already had exceeded all but two of its 2015 targets. In fact, sustainability initiatives are now so well integrated across the company in product design, manufacturing, logistics and marketing that Rockline’s sustainability coordinator actually reduced the number of hours he spends overseeing program activities.
