Nature and forests
We assess risks from nature impacts and dependencies, such as biodiversity loss and deforestation, and build and implement effective programs. Our approach ensures business value and meaningful biodiversity, water, and land strategies.
Business resilience with nature strategies
Building corporate nature programs often begins with assessing the company’s interface with nature, including risks from impacts and dependencies. This can start with one topic, such as forests or water, or can take a more complete approach to include biodiversity, water, oceans, and land.
Nature strategies help a business build resilience and support climate efforts. This means protecting, restoring, and sustainably managing natural resources.
Many companies are already doing work to support nature recovery, so we help companies build on these efforts, from climate programs to sustainable sourcing. We have a gap assessment tool that companies can use to get this work started themselves – available in our Planet-Forward Playbook.
With a view to nature hotspots and opportunities, Pure Strategies develops roadmaps, projects, and collective efforts to support business resilience and opportunities, while aligning with the targets in the Global Biodiversity Framework.
Common projects include:
- Leadership engagement and business case for nature programs

- Nature targets, including SBTN and science-based targets
- Responsible forest management and DCF programs

FAQs
Most companies have some efforts already underway that connect to nature, such as sustainable sourcing, climate, waste, and water projects. How a company builds a nature strategy from these starting points can vary, but typically includes a gap assessment that compares its efforts to global aims, such as those from the Global Biodiversity Framework. Then an assessment of nature risks, impacts and dependencies, helps prioritize where a company may begin advancing its efforts. Pure Strategies finds a nature footprint or land footprint a useful metric for a nature program. This provides a single metric, much like a carbon footprint, that can organize targets and location-specific projects for a program. To help companies get started Pure Strategies offers a Nature Action Forum each year. This is a series of meetings with a cohort of peers to walk through common first steps so that a participant is ready to take action with advancing their nature program. Pure Strategies also has the Planet-Forward series of reports and other resources in our articles, webinars, and case studies to provide more information about how to get started.
Pure Strategies has worked with many clients on nature projects. Pure Strategies helped Toyota Motor North America establish a nature footprint target to protect and restore high value areas. This included assessing the company’s land footprint and identifying the company’s biodiversity priorities. Then, we helped develop appropriate projects to advance on the target. Pure Strategies worked with Everlane to develop its nature program. This included an assessment of the company’s nature risks, impacts and dependencies. Then, Pure Strategies helped prioritize areas to work and explore ways to collaborate across the industry to advance progress. More examples can be found in our case studies, articles, webinars, and reports.
Pure Strategies helps clients assess, define, and act on nature priorities. This includes projects that align with the recommendations in the Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD) disclosures and the LEAP framework. Pure Strategies was an early adopter of TNFD, having piloted it with clients while it was being developed.
Pure Strategies is a pioneer in developing and advancing corporate nature programs, including developing a first framework that connected the Global Biodiversity Framework to actionable approaches for companies to support global aims to recover nature, see the series of Planet-Forward reports. In addition, Pure Strategies was a first corporate engagement member of the Science Based Targets Network (SBTN) and contributed to the development of SBTN methods and guides. As a thought leader in corporate nature programs, we are able to bring together these and other frameworks to customize a robust and science-based program for our clients.
Yes, Pure Strategies has helped many companies assess deforestation and conversion risks across their value chains and then establish policies and programs to mitigate those risks. Pure Strategies then works with internal teams and suppliers to ensure deforestation and conversation-free (DCF) programs are effectively implemented.
