The Era of Deforestation Accountability is Here

Schedule time with Pure Strategies’ Senior Sustainability Advisor, Dave Chaffin to prepare for the EUDR.

The European Union Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) comes into effect on December 30, 2025, which is fast approaching. The regulation requires key deforestation-linked commodities and some derived products to be verified as deforestation-free before being placed on, or exported from, the EU market. This means that companies importing or exporting cattle, cocoa, coffee, palm oil, rubber, soy, wood, and in-scope derived products must meet the EUDR definition of a “deforestation-free product.”

Whether you do business in the EU or not, if your supply chain includes any of the commodities mentioned above or products that contain, have been fed with, or have been made using those commodities, you should be paying close attention.

The EUDR recognizes that deforestation is a major environmental issue that can impact biodiversity loss, climate change, and disruption of ecosystems. Deforestation is also a business issue that can cause economic impact and supply chain issues. By promoting the consumption of deforestation-free products and reducing the EU’s impact on global deforestation and forest degradation, the EUDR on deforestation-free products is expected to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and biodiversity loss.

What should companies do to prepare for the EUDR?

Businesses will need to demonstrate that their products are deforestation-free, taking note of the EUDR’s broad list of in-scope commodities and products, holistic definition of a “deforestation-free product,” and stringent supply chain due diligence requirements.

With the EU’s deadline closing in for large and medium companies to comply by December 30, 2025, and micro and small enterprises to follow suit by June 30, 2026, the era of deforestation accountability is here. Companies are now facing the urgency of assessing their deforestation risks, taking steps to mitigate those risks, and submitting required due diligence statements verifying their compliance.
