Scaling Strategy and Engaging at the Farm Level

MegaFood is a vitamin and supplement company with the bold vision to fill nutritional gaps in communities across the country while also supporting a systematic shift to regenerative agricultural practices. Their goal is to help facilitate the change back to a resilient way of farming, using soil to capture carbon and produce nutrient-dense foods.

MegaFood

MegaFood, a fellow certified B Corporation, launched initiatives to support ingredient transparency, engage key farm partners on environmental and social sustainability, and address nutritional access disparities in northern New England. To achieve their bold vision while continuing to grow market share, MegaFood brought Pure Strategies on to help bring their initiatives together under a more scalable and quantifiable sustainability strategy.

Pure Strategies started by helping MegaFood hone its sustainability vision, which is rooted in the belief that healthy soils and thriving farmer livelihoods enable more nutrient-rich foods, reliable ecosystem functions, and healthier communities. Next, the Pure Strategies team used hotspots analysis, landscape assessment, and analysis of on-farm tools and trends to define goals for MegaFood to track progress across its complex, global supply web.

With the vision and goals in place, the Pure Strategies team helped to shape programs for action by adding depth to existing initiatives and prioritizing additional interventions. One of these strategies is a farm engagement initiative. This program is based on a survey designed to deepen MegaFood’s dialogue with its raw ingredient suppliers around on-farm sustainability practices and gather performance and impact data on critical on-farm sustainability management practices. The assessment that the Pure Strategies team helped create covers soil carbon, energy and water conservation, biodiversity, farm worker livelihoods, and community nutritional access. MegaFood uses the results from the survey to explore improvement opportunities in its supply chain, to identify best practices, and to share successes with other suppliers to collaboratively advance progress.

Further, Pure Strategies helped several MegaFood suppliers pilot a new approach to evaluating soil health, through the Soil Carbon Initiative (SCI). SCI provides soil health and carbon sequestration assurance to farmers and supply chain partners by offering a scientific framework for measuring on-farm soil health and soil carbon outcomes. Pure Strategies’ support for this work included farmer onboarding, advising on soil test methods, and facilitating progress throughout the pilots. MegaFood used these pilots to optimize its SCI implementation approach before scaling across its supply chain.

“Pure Strategies has been MegaFood’s trusted partner in developing all of our corporate, social, and environmental impact goals,” notes Bethany Davis, Director of Social Impact. “Their team provided their deep knowledge of supply chain and labor issues, science-based targets, carbon footprint mapping, long-term strategies, and thinking around short-term goals. Their experience with so many of the leading companies in the sustainability space helped us understand external trends. Pure Strategies has been essential in our process and deeply valuable. They are not just a consulting group; they are part of our team.”
